Mission to Battambang Branch, Court, Prison and to Pailin
16 - 19 July 2008

With CSD court monitor in Battambang CHEA San to meet with BTB court president, amiable NOV Yarath. Newly built BTB court has 8 judges and 2 hearing rooms, a model court in many respects with its professional public announcement and conscientious judges and staff.

Meeting with 16 year old, illiterate juvenile who has just been sentenced to 2 years earlier that morning in BTB court (during my visit with Court President) for stealing window pane of pagoda; "robbery" because he was with another friend. He has already spent 8 months in provisional detention which will be reduced from his 2 year sentence. He promised me that he will learn how to read while completing his sentence.

Meeting with film dissemination partner "Women's Association for Community Development" executive director Ms. Kim Eng and her deputy. We spent the morning conversing with 30 villager and community leaders of Pailin on elections, land issues, and KRT, and also to disseminate Voter's Guide.
